Hurricane Matthew
“For the love of humanity is this really happening again?” I stood in my bedroom late Monday night, October 3, 2016 in shock as my cousin shared with me in our family group chat that a powerful hurricane was due to hit Haiti and many other Caribbean countries and the US in the coming day. All I could think of was the feeling of uncertainty that has creeped upon me once before; six years past as a matter of fact when Haiti was hit by an earthquake of high magnitude. For close to a month, I can recall, that I did not know whether or not my family was dead or alive. On the eve of Hurricane Matthew I remember not really knowing what to do with myself. My mind was wondering in many directions. I wanted to pray but the educator in me wanted to also do research to inform myself on what was to come. So I did research and then I said an informed prayer asking for the Lord to shield all loved ones from harm. “Let there be very few casualties” was what I remember specifically praying for.
Tuesday, October 4, 2016 came and I had to go about the business of my day as if nothing like a major disaster were to happen to my homeland. Work went by incredibly slow and I must admit that it was hard to focus. I sent a message early morning to enquire about my father’s safety. I did not receive a response until 45 minutes later. Can I share that that was the longest 45 minutes of my life, but it was worth it to read, “I am okay.” I did learn shortly after he was okay that he lost the roof to his house at St. Louis Du Sud and it turns out my dad’s house would be among 30,000 homes that were destroyed. According to officials the dealth toll in Haiti has soared to more than 800. To date, I have no word on the where abouts of my mother’s family. Communication for the moment is bad. I hope to hear good news in the coming day(s) that all is well. My heart goes out to my motherland and the lives that have been lost.
