Story Time: How I Came to Love Myself
Once upon a not so long ago time it was hard for me to love myself. And I’m not entirely sure why.
The reason I’m not entirely sure is because I know that I am supposed to believe we are made in the image of a Divine being, and that right there is miraculous, right? What’s not to love?
But self-love is in all honesty a tough one. Depending on our upbringing and a variety of other factors, we tend not to be at “-ease” with ourselves — we see ourselves as being too fat, too anxious, too skinny, too old, too whatever. We’ve gotten so used to telling ourselves lies.
And when something is stirred up inside of us that makes us feel “unpleasant” — we tend to either shove it away or press it down. The press down can be with food, alcohol, work, drugs, working out… Whatever it takes not to see those parts of ourselves we really refuse to love. We don’t make those unpleasant feelings feel welcomed or validated.
After some deep thought perhaps this is “the” original sin, the way we treat ourselves as abandoned sons and daughters.
Self love is one of those things that I kind of had to choose over and over again….it’s one of those things that I had to commit to even when I didn’t feel like it or feel worthy of it. It has taken many days of me faking it before I made it. On days where I felt ugly, I told myself I was beautiful until I believed it.
Where am I now with self love do you ask? I would not say that I have mastered the art of self-care and self-love but at this point I can say that I am pretty darned good at it. My self-love is healthy enough that I accept all of my being, welcome my emotions in all their shades of color, exercise my mind and body, have an enriching spiritual life and community, and when I fail at some life endeavor, I dust yourself off, and press re-start again. If there is any secret to loving yourself I would say it lies in being accepting, gentle and welcoming of yourself.
It was freeing the moment I started to become more gentle with “me” and all parts of my being. Sometimes when we feel down on ourselves, not loving and accepting ourselves, we need to affirm, just like a friend would, that no matter our perceived imperfections, that we are indeed wonderful.
The truth is, we don’t need to be anyone else other than who we are. After all it was He who made us in His image and it is He who loves us beyond measure. Because WE are God’s work. It is imperative that. Each one of us be a fan of His work…. Flaws and all.
