The holiday season is finally here! How do we know it is here do we ask? Well for one we see everything that can be light up decorated in a strand of lights; Christmas carols are playing everywhere; and all different media forms are trying to sell us on all the gifts we need to buy.
It is that time of year right where you can drink, eat, and be merry. After all the holiday message is that we should be happy and grateful. But what happens when we are neither happy nor grateful when this time of year comes around for one reason or another. Perhaps this season reminds us of the loss that we may have experienced of someone special, or we are haunted by past painful holidays, OR we realize that our holiday will never measure up to someone else’s or our childhood holidays for that matter.
Are you wondering at this point how to eliminate having the holiday blues? Before I offer some tips on coping I want you to take comfort in knowing that you are not alone.
Tell someone who cares how you are feeling
It is that simple, say out loud in a safe space with someone you know and trust how you are feeling. Research has also proven that expressing your emotions leads to improved relationships and the large reason behind it is people feel more connected and less alone.
Create something new by reclaiming the holiday
We must beware of traditions, especially, those that we follow that we don’t necessarily know why we began to follow them in the first place. If its tradition that has you blue….ditch it. Reclaim the holiday by doing and being with those that add meaning and pleasure to your life. I say skip dinner, dressing up and just order in and take you to a movie. I do not know but you get the idea. Do something new that feels right for you that you have created.
Be in tune with your emotions and take care of yourself
If you try to suppress your feelings it can lead to more problems. So when your feelings are justified allow yourself the time and the space to feel it and to go through it. Cry it out, reminisce, and just feel your pain if you have to. Once you are done make sure to mentally prepare ways in which you can self soothe yourself to get you in a better mood. Some people like to take a warm bath while others might prefer to phone a friend. Do what you feel would be best for you. Take care of yourself.
